Evaluation into the impact of employee behaviour on productivity at a manufacturing company
Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the influence of negative employee behaviour on an organisation’s productivity at a South African manufacturing company. This was achieved through using a qualitative research methodology approach with the objective of uncovering recommendations for management to consider the best ways to manage human resources for increased productivity purposes. The findings of the current situation at the company showed low motivation from management, poor remuneration standards, compromised employee health and safety, and low employee recognition due to the absence of promotion and employee appraisal. There is also a continuous lack of commitment to performing allocated tasks, absenteeism, and production of low quality work. The factors that were seen to be influencing employee behaviour were dissatisfaction with the job, lack of recognition by management for good performance, poor working environment, and lack of incentives. The findings showed that employee behaviour is a powerful tool and there is a direct relationship between employee behaviour and productivity. Recommendations were made to management to motivate employees through staff development programmes and by giving them due recognition for outstanding performance. Management should provide work-life balance programmes considering that employees have family issues to attend to and create an enabling workplace environment.Downloads
